Aleksandr Cyplakov Professor Michael Franco English 2123-TW01S August 20, 2014 When Innocence and Good Loses to Perversity and Evil Edgar Allan Poe’s â€Å"The Black Cat† is a thematic tale of innocence and good in a man that transforms into evil, horror, wickedness and eventual criminal insanity and murder. Many of Poe’s other stories, such as â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart† or â€Å"The Imp of the Perverse†, showcase their main character’s descent into perverseness, often caused by an unrelenting fixation on a subject, object or feeling that leads them away from to insanity and moral decay. The narrator in â€Å"The Black Cat†, transforms, even mutates, from a caring, loving pet owner and husband to an alcoholic, violent, and insane killer and axe murderer. There are several other themes in the story, as well as forces of symbolism and possibly the supernatural, but the story is mainly a psychological tale of terror that analyzes the complexities and similarities and close emotional bridges between strong emotions like love and hate, fear and elation, safety and horror, the narrator’s sense of self versus their insanity, suppressed guilt and remorse, and the underlying and hidden evil, or perverseness, inside people. Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, journalist, and magazine editor in the 19th century and was noted for his stories and poems that were largely symbolic of the macabre and morbid, the mysterious and supernatural (Diyanni).
