William Shakespeare s Hamlet - The Contemplation Of...

The concept of death evokes a plethora of emotions that send one’s mind into a hurricane of thought. As a motif, death is explored constantly during his or any lifetime for the simple reason that no one knows what comes after death. In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the protagonist: Hamlet, contrasts the ideas of life and death to understand whether life is worth living with all the pain one must endure. Hamlet battles an internal struggle throughout the play to decide if suicide is the correct method to alleviate his hardship and dismay, or if he should face the daunting task of avenging his father’s death. The struggle Hamlet is faced with leads him to debate suicide in his â€Å"To be, or not to be† soliloquy. The contemplation of suicide and murder in the soliloquy shapes his true character by presenting Hamlet as a deep thinker and assists in poising him as a more likeable character in the play; which ultimately builds Hamlet’s character as he e nters the climax of the play in which he fulfills the role of a tragic hero.
